Given its name in memory of one of the saintly kings from the Zagwe Dynasty, King Lalibela, the city can be truly described as the ‘heaven on earth’.
Lacking a title to be named as one of the wonders of the world, Lalibela is home to the 11 rock-hewn churches, all carved out from top to bottom on a spacious giant basaltic rocks – grouped as the northern and eastern clusters; during the 12th century AD.
