Day 1 drive to : Afdera
Drive to Afdera (273kms/5 hours) through the desert area of the Afar, to visit the salt lakes, and learn how this raw material is mined, and then removed.
Day 2: Ertalie
Driving on from here to Afdera, thence to Ertalie, using just the desert tracts, and sandy roads. Evening, after arrival, we can enjoy the active volcano called Erta Alie. Overnight camping (the camping place named Dollo) where we may begin the trek up the mountain, where we spend the entire night, in closer proximity to the volcano. (the walk is 3 hours by foot).
Day 3: Ertalie – Amdella.
(A full day driving/85 kms). Drive to Amdella to visit the Dalol Depression, one of the lowest places in the world (116 meters below see level). Overnight camping at Amdella
*Day 4: Amdella – Dalol – Amedella
(45 minutes/24 kms/). After breakfast, the second drive will be to Dallol depression: the area most often described as ‘otherworldly’, to first-time visitors. An apt description, due to the many unusual changing colours, hot steaming vents, and unearthly terrain in this area; Overnight same Camping
Day 5: Mekele (Full day /170 km/).
After an early breakfast, the upcoming drive continues in the direction of Mekele. Enroute, we will be passing the local people together with their camels. The local trading parties use the same routes (Dalol to Tigray) accompanying their salt-laden caravans toward distant markets. Overnight hotel.
